François Boivin scored two goals Next step: the semi-finals
The Trois-Rivières Attak defeated London City, 6-0, Saturday afternoon at the UQTR stadium, and following the other two games of the Open Canada Cup third round, the Mauricie team has booked its place in the semi-finals.
In the other two duels, played on Monday, the Windsor Border Stars won 4-0 over the Portuguese Supra, whereas the Italia Shooters defeated the North York Astros 1-0.
Trois-Rivières and Windsor are therefore directly qualified for the semi-finals, whereas the Italia Shooters, with the lowest goals differential, will play against London City in a wild card game. The wild card game becomes necessary to meet the Open Canada Cup rules and regulations that provides for the Open Canada Cup final weekend host team if defeated during the rounds a further opportunity to enter the last four.
The winner of the playdowns underway in British Columbia involving 24 Open Canada Cup Western qualifier teams will be the fourth semi-finalists.
The Attak on top
Unpleased with their 2-2 draw on July 13 in London, Marc Dos Santos' men were ready to meet their Southern Ontario rival on home soil in a game with much more at stake.
Dos Santos said that no other results than a victory would be acceptable, and his players responded very well with an impressive 6-0 win.
Following two first half goals from Darko Kolic (5) and Jean-Louis Bessé (22), François Boivin (64 and 86), Boubacar Coulibaly (67) and Cédric Joqueviel (73) scored their first goal with the Attak.
"I am very happy with my performance," said François Boivin, who is not a regular on the Attak line-up. "I have to win my playing time, and when I play I have to give everything I have. It is the Attak inaugural season and we are in the semi-finals…"
Next meeting to be played in… London
The table for the final phase of the Open Canada Cup, who will take place during the Labour Day weekend in London, will be revealed at a later date.
